Q1. (Luke 1:31-34) What did the angel's announcement say about who Mary's Child was and who he was to become?

Who He was:

He said that Mary was blessed among women and that she would give birth 'to a son' and she should call him 'Jesus' (v.31)

Who He will be:

The angel told her that He will 'be great', that He will be called 'the Son of the Most High', (v.32)

That God will give him he 'throne of his father David' - so as a direct decendent, a 'son' of King David, he will become a dynastic King and will 'reign over the house of Jacab forever' (v.33)

But he was also the 'Holy One' the 'Son of God' so he will be king due to His divinity not just His lineage. (v.35)

His kingdom would have no end, praise God!

His name would be Jesus.

He would be great, superior to all others, holding a high position.

His title would be "Son of the Most High", the son of El Elyon - God as revealed to Abraham. In Hebrew the idiom 'Son of' also carries the idea of a person associated as if by ties of sonship - the term "Son of God" in the New Testament refers to Jesus' close association to God himself, and is another way of referring to his divinity.

He would inherit the throne of David and rule over the house of Jacob forever. He would be the long awaited King of the Jews, the Jewish Messiah, "Son of the Most High" and "Son of David" who would rule over the kingdom of God.

His kingdom would be eternal and never end. God's promise to King David in 2 Samuel 7:16 "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever" was about to be fulfilled through Mary's child.

Luke 1:31-34

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

I just keep thinking "Emmanual, God with us". As a young girl, Mary had God with her at all times. He was so much a part of her life and He knew her so well. What an honor.

Gabriel told Mary that her son would be named Jesus. Gabriel told her that her son would be a very important person. Gabriel also told her that her son would inherit the the throne of His "father" David, and that His kingdom would last forever. Gabriel also told her that her son would be called "The Most High".

In short the announcment claimed that Mary's son was the Son of God - divine. He is to become our Lord. This is the great call and challenge of Christmas - to recognize the divinity of Christ and to bow to his Lordship in our lives. So easily spoken and so difficult to live out when our pride, selfishness, ego and sinful self want to be enthroned in his place.
