pjg
As the oldest son He would have learned all aspects of the business: technical, social, and economic. He'd come to understand how to repair and make things, observe a broad range of people dealing with money and business, and how to resolve a variety of conflicts with others. thepearlturtle
Q1. What would Jesus have learned as the son of a carpenter? As the son of a carpenter, Jesus would have learned how to build things, including the church, from the foundation up; He would have learned the art of relationships and fairness in business, as well as honour in completing what He sets out to do - how to keep commitments by watching His father, Joseph take on contracts and complete them. Jesus would have also learned the importance of attention to detail and how to meet individual needs, as His dad would have taken personal orders and filled them to the specification of the customer. He also would have learned that there is a certain way to do things, an order in which things have to be done in order for them to turn out properly, and that if one "cheats" on the correct way to do a job, then one does not end up with good quality. He would have learned a strong work ethic and honour and integrity, as well as mercy and compassion from being the Son of Joseph. What experiences would this have exposed him to? The experiences this would have exposed Him to would be accurate measurement, working with His hands and with tools, customer relations, assessing the worth of products, time management, the ability to maintain a schedule, the ability to manage a household, family relationships, building foundations in structures and relationships, organizational skills, and experience with co-operating with people through pricing and making deals and contracts. thepearlturtle
Q2. (Matthew 1:19) What were Mary's options being pregnant and carrying a baby not her husband's? What kind of character did Joseph exhibit by deciding to divorce Mary quietly and leniently? Mary did not have many options carrying a baby that was not her husband's. In a culture as strict as hers, she was open to being stoned for adultery and shunned, and her only real option for self-support was prostitution. In deciding to divorce Mary quietly and leniently, Joseph showed that He was a godly, compassionate, and merciful man who was filled with the Holy Spirit of God his Father. He also displayed a lack of cruelty and Pharisaical judgment that many in his society were prone to possessing.
SoiKosum
Jesus would have learned the carpentry trade and probably tending to the garden and animals. In addition, HE would also have learned about negotiating and dealing with people. This would have exposed HIM to the various personalities and characters of different people - essentially the good, the bad and the ugly. CHRISTinUS
As the Son of a carpenter, Jesus learned about the value of his father's skills and the social hierarchy of His parents. Jesus would be instructed to do as His parents, that is to rely on God's provisions and favours for all things, also in the world of business. bwithubob
With Joseph as His earthly father Jesus would have learned scripture and the law, which from his teenage years on he would put to good use. As a carpenters son he would have seen his father making and fulfilling agreements, being patient and diligent. He would have discovered that woods are not all the same and have to be treated differently to bring out the best in them. He would have learnt the value of community life, how to give and receive gracefully I don't know how conscious he was in His early years about why he was on earth. Did Mary and Joseph tell him of his virgin birth? I'm sure he was a model child but what did he say whenever he hit his thumb?
Guitar Jim
Q1. What would Jesus have learned as the son of a carpenter? Jesus would have learned everything his earthly father Joseph knew about carptentry. In addition he would have learned how to interact with people, how to look after them when they came in with a problem that needed the expertise of a carpenter to fix. Joseph would have taught him all that and more. If you're not nice to people they won't come back. What experiences would this have exposed him to? I suppose Jesus would have interacted with pretty much everyone in the town, from all social levels. He would have seen how rich people behave as opposed to how poor people behave. We don't know this for certain, but popular opinion is that Joseph died young, before Jesus began His ministry. So it's very likely that He took over from Joseph in the carpenter's shop. When He was rejected in Nazareth they said: Isn't he the carpenter? Jesus would have worked for the whole community in that capacity. gregman1069
Jesus would have learned the advanced skills of carpentry that Jospeh knew. He would have probably learned lessons about honesty, humility, hard work and I'm willing to bet Joseph might have done a few jobs as charity. tgandy
Jesus would have learned many things to help him later in life as a carpenter. He learned from Joseph to work with wood and make furniture, doors, beams, gates, plows and yokes. He also learned how to negotiate business contracts and deal with people. Jesus would have been exposed to all sorts of people and behaviors. This exposure would have given Him a "leg up" on dealing with people later in live. He would have been more patient. charisbarak
Jesus would have learned the correct way to be precise in carpentry. He would have learned how to work hard and please those he made things for. Skills in dealing with people would probably have come into play here too. He had to learn to keep a clean work space and how to prioritize. humblejon
Jesus would have learned the value of hard work with expecting little reward, and pride in using one,s talents and ability that God gave us. Instead of living leisurely, Jesus would have learned to live subsistently and develop a dependent on God the Father. Jesus would have been exposed to people from different social classes, how to relate and communicate with them, and how to serve not to be served. Jesus would become very familiar with the people and customs of the area around Galilee, which will benefit His ministry in this region. needmyzzz
Besides the typical things Jesus would have learned, I think God the Father was preparing him for his future. As a carpenter, I believe a person needs the ability to see the potential...to see not just a block of wood, but to see what that block of wood could become. We see that influence in Jesus' work with his disciples, the people he came in contact with, and especially in our lives today. Simon, the vascillitating one was called Cephas or Peter-the rock-before he ever showed himself as that unmovable rock. The Samaritan woman was worth his time because he saw her potential despite her sinful life. While we were yet sinners He died for us...He saw our potential in the midst of our awful sin. He learned to see beyond the block of wood- beyond what he saw with his physical eyes. Thank God that He sees beyond the physical appearance, beyond what ordinary man sees. Thank God that Jesus had early training as a carpenter...we are more than blocks of wood in HIs eyes!
