Jen
Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? The name means God Saves and that is what Jesus came to do. By giving the name for Jesus to Mary and Joseph independently it would serve to confirm that it was the right thing to do. At that time especialy there may have been pressure to name the child according to custom. It would strengthen them in that case to do what God wanted and there would be complete unity between the two. God Bless! janel
Q3 "JESUS" was not a uncommon name as it was the Hebrew's shortened form of 'Joshua' Israel's most celebrated heroes. The real meaning is "Yahweh saves." Precisely what Jesus' mission was to do here on earth. His destiny was to save the people not from political or military salvation but from sin. To Joseph, the angel explained that by personally naming the child is deeply significant. It meant that Joseph acknowledged him as his own son and became the legal father according to the Semitic law. With this legal adoption, Joseph's ancestry as a descendant of David, was transferred to his legal son. Biologically Jesus is the son of God but legally he is the son of Joseph and heir to the promises of Joseph's ancestor, David. To Mary, God has given Jesus the throne of his father David. Legally making David to be Jesus' ancestor.

Debra M.
What is the significance of the name Jesus? The value of the name of Jesus only comes because of the name 'YHWH', which means 'God is' or 'God exists'. Jesus' name means 'YHWH' is salvation'. The name Jesus is only found in the NT and it is a continuation of the revealed name of God 'YHWH' that is found throughout the OT. Jesus is not a new name and was not a new name to Joseph or Mary. Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? Perhaps to avoid any later confusion or doubt or hesitance on the naming of the child, Jesus. For a husband and wife to receive independent, yet exact, revelation is to leave no room for doubts or confusion. This could be true for Joseph and Mary as well. Marloes
Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? Nomen est omen: God saves. Jews had a tradition for giving names and this name didn't fit. Therefore, the angel told both Mary and Joseph so they would both know it was Gods wil. Not Mary making up something and claiming it was Gods wil just to make Joseph agree. WALT39
Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? The significance of Jesus name is that He is the Saviour. The angel did not want to leave any doubt about Jesus name, so the angel told both of them. The angel told Mary first, and then Joseph. It was Joseph responsibility to name His child and custom would be that he would have to chose and not necessarily listen to his wife. This definitely showed God wanting to bring forth His Son to save us.
Paul H
Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? The name means Yahweh saves. This describes the mission of Jesus very simply; he is being sent by his Father to save us from sin. Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? Because it was so important that both Mary and Joseph fully understood the significance of who the child was. By telling them both that the child was to be named Jesus, in the light of all of the other things which the angel had said to each of them it would have been clear that Jesus was the Messiah. Caboodle
Jesus' name means Yahweh saves. The name indicated his worldly mission. The name is exactly what He does: saves us all from our sins, if we will only let Him. By telling Mary and Joseph the name individually, it was so neither would forget who He was-God on earth in a human form. This way there could be no argument as to His name or no consideration as to what it ought to be.
poetmom
Giving Mary and Joseph the name separately supported the credibility of God's plan. It is a very powerful experience to feel that you've gotten a word from God. When you discover that someone else, independent of your experience, has received the same word, you pretty much know it's from God! God was also looking out for the health of their marriage so that they wouldn't think each other is nuts! They were able to embark on this journey on equal footing, and their marriage undoubtedly grew stronger as a result.

Theresa VJ
The name is so very, very, important. The name is our first step in getting to know someone. It is a mental reminder of the physical and spiritual attributes that the mention of that names brings forth. We can all think of people we have met and then relate to this concept. A person's name represents who and what that person is. It is clue that immediately brings to our mind all that that person is and represents to us. Jesus is the exact representation of His Father. We can see, in Jesus, the exact image of His Father. All of the attributes and character of God, the Trinity, is seen in God the Son. The name of Jesus further gives us insight into the heart of the Father. Jesus, the name, means, Jehovah....God's memorial name though all generations....is salvation. God is not the author of confusion. If Mary and Joseph were to act as one, the message and truth revealed would be made clear and consistent. Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? HIS NAME WAS SIGNIFICANT AND GIVEN TO HIM BECAUS HE WAS TO SAVE PEOPLE FROM THEIR SINS...............BECAUSE MARY WAS TO BE HIS MOTHER AND NEEDED TO NOW SEPARATELY SO THAT SHE COULD PREPARE FOR THE BIRTH OF JESUS..........HE WAS TOBE KNOWN AS THE HIGHEST AND THIS REFERRED TO THE MAGESTY OF GOD. Foofee's Nana
What is the significance of the name Jesus? The name of Jesus was to tell of one who would save us from our sins....not a political leader or warrior as the Jewish people might have expected. Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? I would think it is to make them be on the same page so to speak.....the angel told each of them by themselves.....and then they come together and share this.....it can be no mistake but must be of God. pjg
The significance of the name - "Whose help is Jehovah" - Jesus came as God's great answer for our need to be cleansed from sin and healed from brokenness. Our help for sin and brokenness is paid for by the Lord Jesus. The text declares "... for he shall save his people from their sins." Why tell both of them the name? They are the only couple that will ever have to deal with a virgin birth, therefore they will benefit from the clarity of confirmation. Luke bears out the amount of pressure placed on John's parents to give him a family name. This type of guidance confirmed for them the depth and personal involvement in God's Salvation plan. Ramon
Q3. (Matthew 1:21- And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? Answer: 1. What is the significance of the name Jesus? HE IS THE SAVIOUR. 2. Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? The emphasis is not on whether the Angel give it to Mary and Joseph independently or together..the emphasis is on the name JESUS,as it was written in capital in both instances, with great emphasis. Matthew 1:21- And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Luke 1:31-And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. The name who has been pre ordained,to be the name above all name.. Phil 2:9-11-Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Highohfaith
The name Jesus in Greek means Yahweh Saves. So the significance of Jesus' name is that he would be the savior of the world. He would save us from sin. The messenger makes it clear to Joseph that he is to accept Mary's pregnancy as it is not due to an adulterous relationship, but that it is coming to her through the Holy Spirit. The Angel appears both to Mary and Joseph to make sure they BOTH understand God's intentions concerning her pregnancy and that they both understand the Prince of Peace,God's Son is to be named Jesus and that He would be the Messiah.Jesus, Yahweh Saves! AND HE DOES! He wants Joseph to know that he will adopt the son of God into his own family, therefore he will be the one to give the Christ Child his name, making Him heir to the Throne of David. "... You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins" (1:21)

thepearlturtle
Q3. (Matthew 1:21) What is the significance of the name Jesus? Why do you think the angel gave the name to both Mary (Luke 1:31) and Joseph independently? The significance of the name Jesus is that it means "the Lord saves." This told both Mary and Joseph that the baby that the angel of the Lord spoke to them about was going to be the Saviour of the world, the coming Messiah. I believe that the angel gave the name to both Mary and Joseph independently so that Joseph would be the one to name the baby as the earthly father of the babe, as well as to help him in believing that Jesus is the Son of God and not the son of another man. I believe that the name was given to Mary independently to help her comprehend the miracle of a virgin conception and to assist her in her decision of saying, "Let Your will be done." Both of these people were very godly and, as a result, giving them this information helped them to make the decisions necessary to bring Jesus into the world with them as His parents, for they were both focused on doing the will of God at all costs.
