Q4. The Prophecy of Immanuel

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

The prophecy of Jesus coming was recorded in Isaiah 7:14 as follows:"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel."

I read that Jesus' name was not Immanuel, but the meaning of Immanuel, "God with us." The meaning was told to us in Matthew 1:23, as written as follows

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary? A search of Isaiah 7 on Google reveals that a lot has been written about this and there is a lot of theological debate about the extent to which the prophesy of Isaiah in chapter 7 was indeed a prophesy of the birth of Jesus. In my view however, it is simple. Matthew says that the prophesy of Isaiah is effectively a prophesy of of the birth of Jesus and therefore, it is, irrespective of whether Isaiah intended it as such and irrespective of whether the prophesy related both to an immediate event at the time of Isaiah and King Ahaz (the defeat of Judah's enemies, which is something which historically happened at that time) and to the event of Jesus' birth far in the future. The prophesy found its fulfillment as Matthew describes it when Jesus was conceived by a virgin, Mary, and thereby came to save us in human form, but remained divine by being conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, and in that sense was also Immanuel, or God with us.

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

These are the things that God said, through His prophets, that He was going to do. Even though he was not actually named Immanuel, he was indeed "God with us" by being at once all God and all man.

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

God WITH us. Not JUST above us. Not JUST our Creator. Not JUST our Judge. Not JUST our incomprehensible, eternal. all wise, sovereign, all glorious, omnipresent, all knowing, never tiring, completely righteous, entirely holy, absolutely worthy, never changing, good God...somewhere distant...or apart from us...but WITH us.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. John 1:1-4

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

The birth of Jesus, in His bodily form, was the the way that God could reach us; we can literally see and touch the Son. We could see, revealed in Jesus, God Himself; the glory of the Father,...and though Jesus... we can see truth, and experience life saving grace.

God's ways are so much above our ways...but Jesus emptied Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross, in order to break into our darkness and build the amazing bridge of love that shows us the true heart of God...righteousness and justice...coupled with complete and everlasting love.

How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

"All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel' -- which means, 'God with us.'" (1:22-23)

When the prophecy was made by Isaiah it was made to let the people know that God would always be with them....so was fulfilled in that way.....but the complete fulfillment came by the birth of our Lord Jesus by virgin birth as the Messiah.

A virgin conceiving is impossible with man. The Scriptures had declared it for centuries in Isaiah, but until it happened no one really grasped what God would do. It is a miracle that everyone from Mary to us has to take by faith, as science won't illustrate it for us. It isn't just any child that has been conceived within Mary. The prophecies declare He will save the people from their sin, which leads us to Immanuel. "God with us" to become one of us, far surpassing showing concern. "God with us" by being the seed of God, born from a woman, living sinlessly in perfect union with the Father, and giving His pure life as a sacrificial payment for the sins of the world. We should feel the love as become more aware that "God with us" is the ultimate expression of love.

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

The prophet was foretelling of things, an event to take place at a much later date in history. It was a prophetic revelation for the times in it brought the good news of a Messiah to be born of a virgin. It was however a two fold prophesy in the fact that though it brought great joy for present time. The prophecy would not be completed until a much later time in history, with the birth of Jesus whom was called Immanuel - God is with us. This gave the people at the present time much joy. The prophecy is fulfilled when the Christ Child is born, completed !!

Q4. (Matthew 1:23- Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.)

How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

Answer:

Nowhere in the Bible, has ever mentioned of a Virgin Birth, other than that of Mary.

It is one of the greatest Miracle in human history, that I think will never ever happen again, with its magnitude.

Immanuel means God is with us,..it means that God is our protector,God will save us,from harm and Danger, and that since God is with us,we shall fear no evil,we shall not fear what man can do against us,because we have a mighty protector that no one can defeat

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

The prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary in that "Immanuel" means "God with us" and Jesus is the Son of God, and fully God. He came and lived among His people, and He came as the Saviour and Messiah to save His people from their sins - and all of us who will believe in His name. This is a foreshadowing prophecy, in that it has a future aspect to it as well, in that Jesus will come again for all of us who believe in Him and He will receive us into His heavenly Kingdom at the end of the age. Again, He will be our eternal Saviour dwelling with us, and we will live with Him forever. This fulfilled the prophecy in the Scriptures for a Messiah that the Jews were looking for at the time of Jesus' birth [Jesus also called Immanuel] and it also will fulfill the Scriptures given in the book of Revelation and others regarding Jesus' glorious return for us, His bride, the church.

The prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" found their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary when the Holy Spirit came upon Mary a virgin and she gave birth to Jesus. Subsequently, Jesus grew and died on the cross to save His people from their sins. "Immanuel" - God with us, was fulfilled as Jesus, was with us on earth in bodily form.

Q4. (Matthew 1:23)

How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary

First, fullness in this text means “to complete”. So, the virgin conception was completed by the virgin Mary being the one who would give birth to Jesus. Immanuel means “God with us”. God with us" is a perfect way to describe the birth of the God-Man, Jesus Christ, who is fully man and fully God.

Isaiah prophecied to King Ahaz that a virgin would become pregnant and would name her baby immanuel (God is with us) and this is precisely what happened about 1000 years later. Mary became pregnant by the Holy Spirit and God came to earth in His son. This completes the prophecy but now in an update to the plan the baby is called Jesus (God saves) to tell us precisely why 'God is with us.'

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

I'm not even going to pretend to be a prophecy expert, but my thoughts are that Isaiah's prophecy did pertain to the time in which he made it and to foretelling the birth of the Messiah. In Isaiah's time it's likely that some virgin girl of whom we have no record conceived a child in the normal way with her husband and they named him Immanuel. It wasn't uncommon for prophets and other people to name their children in honor of events that took place of as a sign of things that would soon take place. By the time little Immanuel grew to adolescence Isaiah's prophecy came to pass.

I believe Isaiah's prophecy also foretold the virgin birth of Jesus. That passage may not have been understood in Jesus's time as a Messianic prophecy.

After Jesus's resurrection, He opened the disciples minds to understand all the scriptures concerning Him. Matthew's Gospel in particular contains plenty of references to the fulfilment of scriptural prophecy. Suddenly they were made aware of all the references in the psalms and prophetic writings that probably for ages had been thought to mean something else. Just my theory there.

(Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

This prophecy was partially fulfilled in the time of Ahaz, but reached complete fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Immanuel means God with us and Jesus is God and He came to live among us as a man. If Jesus was just an ordinary child, conceived by a man and a woman, he would have had a sin nature and he would not have been God.

Q4. (Matthew 1:23) How did the prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary?

The prophetic concept of the virgin conception and the name "Immanuel" find their fullness in the birth of Jesus to Mary as the Old Testament prophecy took complete fulfilment in this birth. Now God was with us in the flesh, God presence was with His people.

Perhaps this a bit of a generic answer from a "newcomer" bible study but it would seem your last paragraph sums it up:

"I see Isaiah's words in Isaiah 7:14 as the latter kind of prophetic word. The initial fulfillment presumably took place in the prophet's time, while the ultimate fulfillment and completion of this word is found in Christ. "

The Bible is full of prophetic sayings or foreshadow events.  In the New Testament Jesus "strings pearls".  Isaiah in dealing with Ahaz King of Judah tells him not to fear, stand firm a virgin will conceive and bear a child to be called Immanuel.  This according to Matthew explains the prophetic concept of Jesus' birth. Or, this is called a foreshadow event.

The sign of the birth of Jesus is prophetically given in Isaiah chapter verse 7 that a virgin would give brith to a son and he will be called Immanuel and also in Mathew Chapter 1 :22 it again says that a child would be born through a virgin and he would be called Immanuel. the prophetic  saying in Isaiah has it fullness through the birth of Jesus through Mary which we find in Matthew chapter 1 :22/
