What is the significance for prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David that Joseph "named" the child "Jesus"? Joseph's characture can only be that of what it states in the text. He is a righteous man who obeys what God directs him to do. He seems to be a devout Jewish man who believes in the importance of following the direction of God, not man. The significance of Jesus' naming by Joseph is that by doing so, Joseph in effect "adopts" Jesus by semetic law into his (Joseph's) lineage, thus bringing Jesus in line with David. It had been fortold that Jesus would be from David's bloodline. Joseph named the child what the angel told him to name the child. God wanted Jesus to have that name because it fit Him. Joseph was a humble, righteous man who accepted the Lord's instructions and explanations with trust. The fact that Joseph named the child Jesus again shows Joseph's character. By Joseph naming him he acknowledged himas his son and became his legal father that way Joseph's ancestry from David became Jesus's as well. A man who was devout, full of faith obedient to God, just, merciful, and one who loved and carefully guarded both Mary and the Child Jesus. By Joseph naming Jesus, he knowledges Him as his own son and thus becomes the legal father of the child according to Semitic Law. As a result of this legal adoption, Joseph's ancestry as a descendent of David transfers also to his legal son. Biologically, Jesus is begotten by the Holy Spirit and is thus the "Son of God," but legally he is the son of Joseph and heir to the promises of David, Joseph's ancestor. It was especially significant that Joseph, as Jesus' earthly father, was a descendent of David. There is not a doubt in a Christian's mind that every messianic prophesy from the Old Testament has been fulfilled in Jesus. Those who doubt sometimes say that we cannot have it both ways--Jesus, Son of God and Jesus, descendant of David through Joseph. He was devoted to Mary and Jesus, obedient to God, faithful, just and merciful. 2. Joseph naming the child "Jesus" proved to the world that he accepted Jesus as his legal son. The Messiah had to come from the line of David in order for the prophecies to be fulfilled and the Messiah is God Himself. These two people were righteous people chosen to house the Savior in their home regardless of his genetic structure being Holy. Joseph truly believed that his adopted son Jesus was indeed the chosen one by God to come to earth and take the form of man to save the people, both Jews and Gentiles. Joseph, no doubt took this troubling matter to God in prayer. He was not hasty to judge or to react with hurt and anger. God knew from the beginning that he was righteous, honorable and full of God's grace and that he would do what was right, that is why the angel was sent in the dream. Joseph was a righteous, devout, obedient, faithful, servant of God and he carefully observed the law. He was obedient and did exactly what the angel of God told him to do. He was a good husband and father and he protected his family. He was chosen by God and lived to prove his faithfulness. In Luke it tells of how Joseph lineage was a direct descendant of David and of whom the Messiah would come. Jesus was begotten of the Holy Spirit and is the "Son of God" but legally according to law he was the son of Mary and Joseph and heir to the promises of David through Joseph whom was a direct descedant of David and Abraham fulfilling the prophecy. Joseph took Jesus as his son meant that he legally adopted him into his heritage--in which Joseph's line come King David (Son of David). The scriptures tell us, Joseph was a righteous man. Righteousness is the character of God and our source is found in Him. Righteousness is seen first in mans relationship with Almighty God and than with other people. Joseph sought the best for Mary. Joseph's righteousness is seen in his character, looking for a peaceful means to this devastating situation, not only for Mary, the women he loved, but for himself also, for his dream was falling apart. When our dreams are falling apart, is our character still showing the love of God? This is what I want, even if He slay me, yet will I trust Him. We serve an awesome God! The prophetic fulfillment to the prophecy in Isaiah could have been a fulfillment at that time, however, THE FULFILLMENT was completed in the birth of Jesus, as seen in His geneology, because Joseph named his son - Jesus, a sign that God was with them. Joseph's accepting of Mary as his wife tells us that his character is one of humbleness, obedience to God, love for Mary, and trust in God. The fact that Joseph "named" the child Jesus was significant in relation to prophetic fulfillment of Jesus as a Son of David because 1) Joseph's "naming" Jesus meant that he had accepted/adopted Jesus as his son even though Joseph knew that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit; 2) Therefore, since Joseph was a descendant of king David, then this would mean that his 'son' Jesus was also a Son of David. Before the Angel appeared to him he was thinking of quietely but honourably leaving Mary. But all that changed after the message from God through the Angel instructing Joseph not to be afraid and leave Mary, but that he should marry her, and Joseph obediently accepted. When he woke up he took Mary to be his wife The prophetic fullfilment is that Jesus was borne as God among His people to be with them and deliver them from their enemy, Satan. This is a shadowing prophesy that was a repeat of God coming to be with His people in the Kingdom of Judah when they were threatened by the Asyrians. At that time Isaiah prophesied that a child, Immanuel' would be born among the people of Judah and by the time he was a young boy Judah's enemies would be defeated. Similarly Jesus was born as a human child yet he was also God as a symbol of God being among His people and delivering them from the bondage of sin. Joseph was worried about his "clean " character and hence had a doubt to disown or own Mary as his wife . He , however , took the wise step , and trusted God . The prephetic fulfilment was possible as a result . Joseph named the child Jesus in response to Gods commandment . The significance of Joseph as a son of David naming the child is that by naming the child he was adopting him and therefore making Jesus a descendant of David,fulfilling prophecy.
