Don W
The overarching theme of Jesus’ teaching this whole passage (verses 21-26) is the fulfillment of the second greatest commandment that the Lord God gave to us, that is to love our neighbors as ourselves. In other words, to love them as much or even more then we love ourselves, and to do unto them many more good things then the good things we do for ourselves. Elsewhere in the Holy Bible this is put as to prefer to others first the things which we like to do and to have; and to be humble before others and to do the works of righteousness, and hate the works of evil in our lives as we follow and obey our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This commandment follows our obedience to the first greatest commandment, that is, to love the Lord our God with all of our hearts, with all of our souls, and with all our strength (Deut. 6:5 and elsewhere). Since our Lord Jesus did all of these things in His entire life, He fulfilled all of the Commandments that His Father in heaven gave to us; and we, too, can be a part of this fulfillment when we live the way He wants us to live through living in and through the Holy Spirit of God. Praise be to the Lord our God for the wonderful works He has done for and in us!!!!! Amen!

Therefore, we can't harbor anger against our fellow man. We should show compassion, and we should show reconciliation. We should be willing to conduct ourselves in a manner that allows our salt and light to show through. Be honest and be willing to forgive. And not only forgive, but also forget the offense. Sometimes this is very difficult to do. But as Jesus' representatives, we must learn to conduct ourselves in a manner that shows others that Jesus is real, and that He is even more compassionate than we are! God is love, and in Him, there is no hate at all. No dishonesty.

Verses 25-26 discuss settling a civil suit before going to court. What is the overarching theme of Jesus' teaching in our entire passage, verses 21-26? Jesus explained how the law was to be interpreted and applied, and that he did not come to abolish but to fulfil the law. He calls for a righteousness exceeding that of the Pharisees. Jesus means that it is by living lives of righteousness that we can live in right relationships to one another. There is greed, selfishness, anger, immorality, and revenge, among others that can destroy relationships. It is relationships that test our righteousness: By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" John 13:35 (NIV). What is the overarching theme of Jesus' teaching in our entire passage, verses 21-26? This is a lesson about anger, being angry with your brother is not the way to God. To show that we are right with God, will show that we are right with our neighbors and if we are not right with our neighbors, this is a clear sign, we are not right with God. Anger without a cause can lead us into greater darkness, it is the root of wickedness and we must do away with this kind of thinking and being, it can lead to destruction. Being angry with our brothers and sisters is contrary to God's love and the angry heart doesn't glorify God. We are to forgive one another and love our neighbors as ourselves, do right in everyway possible or if not, pay the consequences.
