Q2. An Eye for an Eye

Recommended Posts

The purpose of the "eye for an eye" and a "tooth for a tooth" regulation was to restrain man's vindictiveness. The law of retaliation stated that the punishment should fit the crime-no more,no less.

This law was designed to be administered by a court or judge, not the individual.

The law of retaliation was designed to govern personal action. It prohibited taking justice into one's own hands.

The purpose of the "eye for eye, and tooth for tooth" regulation is to limit the degree of punishment a person could receive or inflict. The punishment should fit the crime. It should be just.

The law was geared to be administered by a court or judge and to govern judicial action. Personal revenge is not for the individual to administer. God is the judge. Revenge is for Him to administer. This is stated throughout scripture. If revenge and personal action should be the law, societies would be in total chaos -- a lawless place to live.

the israelites were coming out of the world. everything they were taught was through egypt and its customs. god brought them out of egypt to instruct them on how to live while they were in the desert and before the went into the promised land.they had to be taught how to respect other people and their things. to honor them.i believe this law starts within the individual and governs them throughout their lives. sometimes you will need court to decide since how not everyone is taught to respect others or their things.

(1) It was to restrain man's vindictiveness against one another, not to encourage it. We are not to take matters into our own hands. (2) It is to be administered by a court after everything has been investigated. (3) I think it is designed to govern personal action so that we will not take matters into our own hands.

The point here is to restrain man's vindictiveness, not encourage it. "Law of retaliation," simply stated says that you may not extract from someone who has injured you any more than you have lost. In other words, the punishment should fit the crime -- no more, no less. We find it first in the ancient Code of Hammurabi, a king who ruled in Babylon from 1728 to 1686 BC. It was designed for justice administered through a court of law.

The purpose of the law was to fit the crime to the punishment, not for personal retaliation but in the judicial system.

The purpose of this regulation was to keep people from taking things that didn't belong to them, or killing out of revenge. That's why we have laws in this country- to keep us from taking the law into our own hands. Can you imagine what would happen if we were allowed to take vengence on anyone for anything? God says that vengence is His, and we are to wait for His righteous judgement. In the meantime, we have the laws of our land to see to it that people who deserve punishment because they broke a law-well, they get due punishment.

The "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" regulation was a method used to restrain unrestricted revenge against a person who had done another wrong, to be administered by a court, not by the individual in the governing of personal action.

The purpose of the regulation was for a guide to the judges and that men would not take revenge themselves. It is to be administered by a court or judge. Is is designed to govern a personal action. The punishment was to fit the crome. No more, no less. What Christ is wanting to teach us in not to be revengeful. Go beyond by forgiving them. The law of retaliation must be made consistent with the law of love. To show ourselves the true disciples of Christ by forgiving. Christ wants us to be charitable and beneficent. Do no hurt to our neighbor, but do all the good we can. We are to show His love. We are to show kindness, and we are to give of ourselves as Christ gave of Himself.

What was the purpose of the "Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth" regulation?

Is this law designed to be administered by a court or judge, or by an individual?

Is it designed to govern judicial action or personal action?

The main intent of Mosaic legislation was to control excesses. It was in this case, to control anger and violence and the desire for revenge. If any harm is done to us, the immediate natural instinct is to hit back. We have by nature this tendency to wrath and anger, to retribution and retaliation. However, this was a law for the civil courts, laid down in order that the practice of seeking private revenge might be discouraged. The Old Testament passages do not mean,

As a limit to the punishment that was to be meted out. It is a method of ensuring that the punishment fits the crime, no more, no less.

It is designed to be administered by courts or judges, not by individuals. People are not to take the law into their own hands.

The orginal intent of an eye for eye was to restrain man's vindictiveness. A person who was wronged might want to exact greater harm on one who harmed him. This law put a limit so to speak on the retailatory action. Witnesses were called and judges investigated and determined the truth of the situation. The intent was for judicial action, though it appears that the Pharissees of the time were interpreting the verses as personal action.

These old laws are before Jesus advice during the greatest teaching ever. Legalistic interpretation of the "wrong" would lead to equal value be extracted from the guilty party. This covers judicial actions, for those who chose to be legalistic. Jesus expects more than that from his followers.

The purpose of the "eye for eye, tooth for tooth" regulation was to make sure that no one administered more punishment than was justified for a crime. In other words, "the punishment had to fit the crime." It was designed to be administered by a judge so that no one could take the law into their own hands.

The purpose for this regulation was to set standards of punishment that fit the crime. The punishment is to be administered not by an individual and is to be administered by the court/ legal system. In this way it protects a victim for retaliating in a vengeful way and punishing out of balance with the crime. I find it interesting the value put on human life is only equal to human life; there is no "jail sentence" for the taking of a human life. And of course God's standard does not include "circumstantial" evidence for ascertaining a guilty conviction but multiple eye witnesses. In this way it is easy to see how God's ways are so much better than man's.

The purpose of the 'eye for an eye' 'tooth for a tooth' regulation was established to put the crime into the proper perspective. Only punish the accused according to his crime, no less, no more.

The law is designed to be administered by a court or judge. Never personal action, when emotions are involved one cannot properly judge the crime according to its degree. Jurisprudence must be exercised to avoid abuse of punishment.

The "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth" regulation was instituted as a guide for judges, not as a rule for personal relationships. This rule was instituted to make the punishment fit the crime.  Jesus used this principle to teach us not to retaliate.  One must ask
God for wisdom before judging.  Too harsh a punishment is unfair and too lenient doesn't teach.  Prayer before judging.
