servant for Christ Posted April 1, 2008 Report Posted April 1, 2008 Q4. (Matthew 5:38-42) If we were to assume that Jesus is teaching on retaliation and revenge rather than pacifism in verses 38-42, how would you sum up his teaching in a single sentence? There is only one sentence: Love your neighbor as you would have them to love you. Show the love of Christ to everyone. Quote
MJJ Posted April 8, 2008 Report Posted April 8, 2008 Q4. (Matthew 5:38-42) If we were to assume that Jesus is teaching on retaliation and revenge rather than pacifism in verses 38-42, how would you sum up his teaching in a single sentence? Jesus is calling his followers to a higher standard. Instead of retaliation and resistance against enemies, he calls them to a radical love, rather than turn on them with resistance and retaliation we are to -- in love for them -- give them more than they require. tgandy Posted October 4, 2013 Report Posted October 4, 2013 Jesus taught us to love one another and to go even one step farther in dealing with one who wronged us. He told us to go the extra mile with them. If he had taught us to retaliate we would return what was done to us. However, he did not teach this. Love one another as God has love you. or Do unto others..... Quote

(Matthew 5:38-42) If we were to assume that Jesus is teaching on retaliation and revenge rather than pacifism in verses 38-42, how would you sum up his teaching in a single sentence? I would sum up Jesus' teaching on retaliation and revenge with merging parts of verses 44 and 45 where Jesus says, "I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven."
