When we obey sin we allow it to have authority over us, our mortal bodies; we follow our natural passions and submit to that temptation because we cannot do otherwise.We actually serve sin as it is our master. Before we became Christians we had sin reign in our bodies, our minds and our hearts. We were obedient to every whim of the flesh life. Now however, we should allow the Holy Spirit to reign in us. So if we obey our flesh and do as it wants then we are inadvertently continuing the reign of sin in our lives and submitting once more as slaves to sin even though we have been freed and no longer are controlled by sin. We obey God, and are now serving him with every aspect of our lives and bodies. We freely choose to be under God's control and seek to please him by obeying him. The "reign" of sin is the dominance of sin in our lives. This means we will be slaves to sinful desires. Paul says that if we are obedient to Satan, who is the source of all sinful desires, we allow sin to reign over us. But obedience to Jesus Christ,the righteous One, will free us from the "reign" of sin in our lives. Obedience to God will give us victory over sin. We can face temptation and overcome it through the help of the Holy Spirit. So obedience to Satan will enslave to the "reign" of sin but if we choose to be obedient to the Righteous One we will be free from the "reign" of sin. But we are now new creatures in Christ so that our eyes are firmly openend to sin and its desire for us. Basically we want to please ourselves and be selfish and that is sin. We put ourselves first and that is sin. If we let sin have complete control, therefore being obedient to the sin, it causes us to give into the temptation it produces, which in turn causes us not to be obedient to God. When we submit our bodies to sin we give in to the desires of the flesh, we are allowing that sinful nature to reign in our life. As the evil desires are reigning as king in our life we are becoming obedient to the fleshly desires, to the fact that we are allowing it to lead our life. If we offer obedience to Christ than we have the promise, the hope, the fore knowledge that by the Grace of God Jesus died to deliver us from the bounds of sin and death. If we 'believe in the Lord Jesus we will be saved' (Romans 16.10) from obedience to the powers of evil and sin. If we do not believe than we are obedient to sin and are slaves to sin. DOIT Posted November 16, 2015 Report Share Posted November 16, 2015 When Jesus gave his life for us we were washed "clean of sin" and we accepted to live under the "Reign of God" and obey his every command. Obviously Satan is not going to take this "lying down" and will use every "trick in his book" to prevent us from making this change, he will do what ever is needed to break the obedient relationship we have with God. Satan's only desire is to own the soul of every man and woman (and child), so that he may be their master, He will then command them to be slaves to his sinful ways by making them obey his every wish and won't give up until this task has been accomplished. He is determined that "he and only he", will be their "supreme ruler" and that his followers will obey his every command. However, true Christians become slaves to the "law of righteousness" and will be in a constant battle with him, presenting themselves as obedient and loyal servants to their only master; "the one who gave them life" and that is God! They will make sure that Satan is not able to enter into their thoughts with his sinful ways by filling their minds with things that follow the law of righteousness! To obey the “reign of sin”, all one must do is continue in an un-repentant life, at the expense of eternal life of course. Even before we began following Christ we practiced a form of obedience. That was a deadly form of obedience which holds no eternal future along with all the benefits we started to reap when we began to obey God. When we were slaves to sin we obeyed our sinful natures and did whatever we felt like doing , We gave free reign to our lusts and desires. But now we are under Christ and we obey Him . Whatever person or thing controls us is the one that we will obey. If we give ourselves over to Christ then we obey Him because we love Him. As Jesus said in the Gospel of John to the Pharisees and Sadducees and scribes about their parentage anyone who did not believe Jesus and sought to kill him did the work of the enemy and was not the son of God but a son of the enemy instead and obeyed him instead. However they did not realize how far away they truly were from God until it was too late. When you choose to obey sin in any way it has become your master. Obedience to God or to Satan is not passive but rather willful~my heart will always worship something. When sin reigns (exercises authority and dominating control) my body is subject to and willingly yielded to the lusts and desires of a king (Satan and self) which is opposed to God. I was struck with the “battle terminology” Paul uses in this section. There is a “command central” in every human heart. As a Christian I’ve been transferred to a new kingdom with a new King. If we give in to ****, anger, deceit etc, that means we are obedient to that evil, then we have sin (unrighteousness) reigning in our lives. Krissi Posted August 30, 2023 Report Share Posted August 30, 2023 Obedience to God negates sin. One after the next, sins wither and slowly die. The transformation (sanctification) has begun. This is a painful process. I'm surprised that so many on this site think that dying to the old self/man/Adam is joyous, for in my experience, giving up sin or even giving up good things I desire is like ripping out a small piece of my hope and heart.
