Q1. False Doctrine

Recommended Posts

It caused controversy it was not of sincere faith which caused people to wander and teachers to teach things in which they didn't know what they were talking about.

their is no different then 2000 years ago by gossip and the story changes, the gossip changes the gospel.

then is takes the real meaning away from the church and i think this is why he wants Thimothy to repair the church

What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

False doctrine seems like it really messes everything up. What I see the most is that it causes a major division in a church and it can almost be like half of the church versus the other half. The passage talks about meaningless talk and that these controversies are turning people away from Gods work. My question is where do you draw the line? In our church right now there is a controversial issue that has us divided. It's not a huge issue yet but at what point do you stop having the debate in order to keep the focus on God and not on meaningless talk?

I think the spirit of the church is very crippled when there is doctrinal controversies and that is why Satan loves getting the controversial ball rolling.

I think that the last two questions are really one in the same. I believe that the overall mission of the church is to grow the kingdom and when we are doing that correctly our church will grow. These types of "meaningless" talk only take our focus off of what God truly calls us to be doing. Satan likes to use these things almost like a slight of hand. He gets us to focus our attention on these little things and while our attention is there he is actually leading us away from what God wants from us.

The false doctrines in Ephesus seemed to distract the believers from learning God's truth that Paul, Timothy and others grounded in the faith were trying to teach. I agree with others on this forum that some people thrive on controversy and like to stir up trouble. Paul was telling Timothy to guide the believers back to the truth.

The false doctrines were also drawing the believers away from God's love for others. Instead of loving one another and doing good works that flowed from that love, they were engaging in meaningless talk.

I think the ultimate result of this false doctrine, controversy and meaningless talk was the church in Ephesus not being unified and not being effective in doing God's will. They were concentrating on themselves and not looking to the needs of others. It kept them from doing what God wanted.

How true that is of some churches today as well. We would do well to promote love for others and unity in order to do the work God has called us to as a local body of believers and as a universal body of God's children!

Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

I can see what Paul means in the history of my country.

In the 16th century, there was a big war between the protestant prince of Orange and the catholic king of Spain.

Finally, the king kept the south (that stayed catholic) and the prince got the north (that became protestant).

The first thing the protestants did, was arguing about baptism: for children or for adults?

Now the war with Spain had cooled down, the protestants started a war of their own.

Many people who were for baptism for adults were killed and a minority could escape to the USA.

20th century, there were also lots of church-divorces, most of them about small details about baptism.

They did not take a stand together, that would have made christianity strong.

They split up, resulting in smaller groups that are much weaker.

My family tells me that in the fifites of 20th century, people from other churches had their own shops and did not wanted to talk together (so called 'verzuiling')!

This is exactly were Paul warns us for!

Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

False doctrines cause controversies in the church. There has to be love and a strong desire to know God and false doctrines just take everyone down the wrong path and away from God. Paul and Timothy were preaching truth, they were hearing from God and proclaiming His word.

Controversy just separates believers from God. When believers are talking small talk they get their eyes off what is important and have their eyes on self.

God is love and love has to grow. When there is love in a church it draws people to God. When there is bickering and strife eyes are surly not on what God wants. The mission of the church is to show the love of Christ, to help others and to tell others about the love of Christ that brings salvation and eternal life.

The false doctrines that involved Jewish myths and endless genealogies was just part of the "traditions of the elders" that "nullify the word of God" (Mark 7) If we hold to the teachings of men, we are hypocrites, our hearts are far from him, and our worship is in vain.

A church that is not following the leadership of the Holy Spirit is not a church that will be in the unity of the Spirit. Only the true gospel produces life. Many "toxic " gospels that are being taught produce sick, weak, unhealthy Christians that do more for the work of Satan than anything else! People are looking for truth in the middle of the chaos of the world and when they look to the church for that truth, too many times all they find is more chaos! So the church is unable to fulfill the great comission until they repent and get back to the word of God and then living it out.

they weregetting away from the teachings of jesus and they were teaching false teachings. this could keep the church from growingand cause followers to beleive things that are not true and then they would be led astray people find other churches to go to where there are no false doctrines. it takes the focus off the one true God and off the teachings of Jesus

I have been to many churches and I found in most of the churches, the congregation is spiritually dead. They draw near with their mouth and they honor with their lips, but their heart is far from God.I have heard of fellow christian taking advantage of another christian in the same church for the sake of quick-buck.You can see that today in some of the ministry where large sum of donation are collected all in the name of Jesus. This is the result of false doctrines where the truth is perverted and the message of the gospel brings a bad taste to the listerner.

Some of the results of false doctrine in the church of Ephesus were their leadership was false and they had desires for wealth. They had lost their faith and so by listening to false doctrine their was confusion and controversy leading to no peace in the church Satan was working inside the church that was leading to destruction. Controversy hurts the Spirit of the church by disrupting the teaching of the "Good News". The Holy Spirit can not help teach and counsel Christians while their is confusion and controversy in the church. The church cannot grow if everyone is not in accord with each other about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is bitterness and dispute going on in the church.

The Church cannot grow if their is distracted by false doctrine and so they cannot mature as growing Christians should.

(1) Leaders of the Church that were false teachers; (2) greed; (3) doctrines that were dividing the Church; (4) destruction of the faith of some of the Church members; (5) confusion and controversy. . .

Basically we model our lives on what we were taught / how we are taught as well as those who taught us and teach us - which simply means if they were ignorant there is a very strong possiblity that we will also be ignorant - if they were off base we will also be off base. . . Bad doctrine results in controversial and warped Christians - Good sound doctrine / teaching results in mature Christians who pattern their lives after Christ and His teachings - live a life in agreement with the Word of God - which in-turn keep us on course with God's will, purpose and plan for their personal lives *** well as that of the Body of Christ as a whole (the Church). . .

Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

The results of the teachings of false doctrine was that the church was getting further and further away from the teachings of Jesus. If the teachings are false then the spirit is false. When the spirit is false the church will not grow. The teachings of false doctrine is like telling a lie to God. When you tell enough lies people won't believe in you and that causes the church to split. And a split church cannot do the mission that it is meant to do.

The lack of stability,I believe would be effected. Dwelling on elementary principles

for a long time would be more effective than pressing in on matters of construde

doctrine. Developing upon non "Truths" would inhabit the Spirit to move; thus causing

lack of growth (God wouldn't send souls to mature in such enviroment). The mssion being

on Jesus and Jesus alone. Building disciples to further the Gospel of Salvation,

anything else becomes a cult, doesn't it?

Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

The result of false doctrine in the church was causing a lot of discussions on things that were not worth while talking about such as false teachings and myths. The important teaching was God's work , which has everything to do with faith.

If everyone is arguing about how important their background is and how far they can go back in their family history going back to one of the tribes of Israel I think that would hurt the spirit of the church especially if you were a

Gentile believer. You certainly are not focused on the love of Christ but on yourself.

It prevents growth in that the focus in on you being the all important one and not Christ.

It keeps the church from it's mission in that if we are centered on ourselves then there is no room for Christ and Christ has to be the reason for our existence.

Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

Some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus:

-Leadership crisis among the elders, some of whom are false teachers

-Desire for wealth--greed

-Devisive asceticism from the Judaizers

-Destruction of the Faith of some

-Confusion and controversy that is disturbing the peace and unity of the church.

Doctrinal contoversy hurts the spirit of a church by creating that distraction (loss of focus)from the things which are most important.

It prevents growth since the direction of the church is diverted.Individuals now not in harmony anymore;they become engulfed in their own interests.

It compromises the church's mission. In the sense that if the church is not at peace and unity then there can be no progress or no moving forward.(In unity lies strength.)

What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus?

The results are that these people are not living the true word of god, godliness lives that the good book teaches us to do. It states that there are false teachers, usually that is the work of the devil to ensure that these people are arguing and divison of the church itself.

How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church?

It hurts the spirit of the church becasue these people are receiving false teaching (inspired by the devil) and will not have faith and trust in god. This church will not have the correct teaching of the god and thus will turn away from god that results in living a sinful life (which the devil wants).

How does it prevent growth?

It prevents the groth of gods knoeledge and living a blessful life. It prevents growth in gods teachings and understanding of gods word.

How does it keep the church from its mission?

It will fill the people's head with useless tales and myths and it promotes useless questioning rather than promotes gods word and grace.

It appears that some of the church's leaders and teachers had gotten "off message," and were teaching matters that they really had no knowledge of. To me, it seems like the Gospel as proclaimed by Christ and his Apostles was just too simple for some of the leaders, so they had to complicate it.

I understand that false teaching will lead to confusion about what to believe. Teaches are like a guideline for us. If our guidelines are wishy-washy then what do you follow. Also as paul indicated, false doctrine may create a waste of time, it seems sometimes we like to compare different denominations and argue their beliefs when in fact we should be spending time discerning for ourselvrs and our church. In other words spending time with god. The church will lose it's congrgation if the love of the lord is not their, we must always be loving, accepting, and living the teachings of christ.

Some of the results of false doctrines in the church were; ministering questions rather than godly edifying, the paid attention and taught fables and genealogies, they did a lot of vain talking or fruitless jangling.

Doctrinal controversy hurts the church by causing division, confusion, contention, strife and evil suspicions.

It prevents growth because minds are clearly taken off the word of God, when that happens faith is stunted because it is not being fed.

The church mission is to teach sound doctrine; so therefore if the false teachers don’t have it in them they cannot teach it.

:o False doctrine is misleading to oneself and their Christian friends in the church. It breaks down the fellowship and can actually destroy relationships in families and friends. It create breaks down of the fellowship and Christian relationship of growing in the faith. Timothy was faced with Jews who were trying to mix the law with grace.

Q1. (1 Timothy 1:3-7) What were some of the results of false doctrine in the church at Ephesus? How does doctrinal controversy hurt the spirit of a church? How does it prevent growth? How does it keep the church from its mission?

False doctrine confuses members of the church to the point that they are unable to serve the purpose God has for them to do. It creates arguments, division and separation of unity of the body of Christ. It destroys the spirit in that there is too much contention among the members. Many become dissatified and leave. There is no unity to work toward the real mission the church is suppose to do. BettyJo
