Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

You need to make sure that they are sincere about their faith and that they are truly ready for such a responsiblity.

Do they attend church regularly? Can they be counted on for various projects? Are they willing to invite people they don't know to their dinner table? How do they respond to homeless people, or people who are begging for food?

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

Potential leaders need to be carefully observed and tested so as to be sure they live what they say they believe. It is important that they be a living example of Christ-likeness in all situations. One should be looking for a person who has the quality characteristics mentioned by Paul and Titus. Characteristics that show evidence they are truly a person of God, one living a holy life that brings glory to Christ and the church.

There is a certain amount of maturity needed to become a leader. Time & actions will prove one way or the other. You can watch for attitudes, how he handles all sorts of situations, and genuineness of his relationship with Jesus Christ.

Because they are to be the leaders and guides for the body of Christ and only Godly men should hold this psoition. You should always look for the qualities found in the Bible faithfulness to God, Family, and Church. Strong leadership qualities in their homes. Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

It Is because God's work is a very great and excellent work; it is not a bare name, title, dignity, a place of honour and command; but a work, a work of vast importance, labour, and difficulty: so we should take heed therefore whom thou dost admit, and of those that are also admitted into the sacred function, to consider the great weight of that important service, to enterprize it with extraordinary dread and caution, looking upon their office not with aspiring but tremendous thoughts:--for who is sufficient for these things?

Mathew Henry says in his commentary "The soundness of their judgments, their zeal for Christ and the blamelessness of their conversation, must be proven." We are a witness to the world in everything we do including those we put into positions of responsibility and authority in the church.

I believe the key word here would be mature, that is, in the Christian faith. It takes time, though some grow more quickly that others, to become grounded and rooted. Only through wisdom, knowledge and understanding of the Word and it's application can one be responsibly considered to be an elder. Only by observation and testing can leadership qualities be determined.

Q2. (1Timothy 3:6, 10)

Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office?

Leaders should be observed for some time and perhaps even given some minor responsibilities in the local church. As they prove themselves to be trustworthy and faithful, then they can be advanced to greater responsibilities.

What should you be looking for during this period?

His personal character must be above reproach. If married, the husband of one wife, and faithful to her. He must be of sober-minded, that is not frivolous; self-disciplined; respectable; hospitable, a lover of strangers; faithful, trustworthy, and dependable; a devout believer, hating all evil; upright and just in all his dealings with others; and not a recent convert.

Leaders should be observed carefully and tested BEFORE placing them in office, to ensure they are deeply committed to God and the Church. When they become leaders, the church submits itself to their leadership, so we must be very sure they are the right men.

We should be looking at dedication to God and the Church, sober and steady men of upright character, trustworthy, welcoming and approachable with the ability to lead, teach, encourage and correct, (plus all the other qualities we have already covered), but most of all I think it is important that they should be full, and being continuously filled with the Holy Spirit.

God Bless,

Greta

Church leaders should be above reproach because they represent the Church. They must be sober, dependable men who love the Lord and serve the people.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office?

Paul calls this testing...folks can usually only "fake it" for so long. To place an immature, individual who lacks character in the role of leader, can be disatrous for him/her and for the church. One such man was chosen at a former church, and was an instrument of Satan in "blowing apart" the church. He concocted lies, and was puffed up by his "high" office.

What should you be looking for during this period?

One with character and who is spiritually and emotionally mature, who has been tested in other areas of ministry first, trustworthy, dependable, loves what is good and upright, is devout (loves God and is in a growing mode...not resting on his laurels or past relationship with God), is above reproach. One who loves others and is hospitable, usually does so because he/she loves God. I would add, one who has a servants heart, is not argumentive, is able to lead, and is baptized in the Holy Spirit, and discerning.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

When selecting someone to lead others in matters of salvation it becomes important to make sure that they are God fearing and upright citizens. They should be able to teach, listen and guide others in the way of the Lord. They must be respected by those around them and be known as one who's heart is right with God.Their families should portray the same mannerisms which would be brought about by the upbringing they had.Remember that being a leader in Gods house carries great responsibility, and they will be judged according to what they teach others,so when electing leaders great care and concern should be taken.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

When choosing a leader for a church, you need to be sure that they are true to the church and not using their position for something else. Can they be fully dedicated to the church, do they attend regurally, are they respected by the other people of the church? They should also have a good standing within their family, this shows a loving person whom people can look up to.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

Leaders provide guidance to their flock and a moral example. They must be able to teach by instruction and by example. No one can teach what they do not know and practice. During the testing period, before the leader is placed into a leadership position, people should be observing and searching the candidate for constancy, sobriety, an even temper, not greedy, experienced in teaching, a good family man, to name a few.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office?

Timothey prooved to be a man of good report Act 16:2 - He did much to bring truth to the church, where false teaching was being taught.

There were many people who claimed to know God, but their actions proved that they didn't, giving way to satan.

Even more important today, we have men of faith, tested by God, to be our leaders, for there are many false teachings going forth today, many who do not teach - we are to be holy, for God is holy.

What should you be looking for during this period?

They, as well as the church today, should be looking for - a man of "faith" - a man who speaks and lives

the same thing - a man who is not a drunkard - a man who is willing to serve - a man who is kind - a man who loves his family - a man who does not have the love of money - a man who loves God and God's Son, Yeshua - a man who believes that God who raised Yeshua from the dead, will also raise those who put their trust in the Messiah, Yeshua.

Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period?

The whole lives of a leader should be open to scrutiny and be seen to have integrity in respect of reputation (including reputation in the world), in consistency, in attention to details of the faith and obvious seriousness about growing daily therein, because once someone has been installed as leader and given authority within the church, they must be trustworthy of that role. Otherwise there is big trouble ahead, immaturity in leadership produces errors with widespread effects within the church (and its observers). There are fine balances to be maintained (the balance of leadership and servanthood, of responsibility and direction, of financial management and accountability, of passion and wisdom and many others. There needs to be a careful process of testing, almost in apprenticeships, before graduation into higher office (eg deacon, elder, bishop), or possibly worker, youth pastor, assistant pastor, senior pastor, bishop. The whole church should be involved in this process, not just the pastor. (Acts 4:32, sharing in all things, Acts 6:3 the brethren are asked to select seven men to oversee provisions,)

We are basically looking for integrity over a long term in every respect, both within the church and among outsiders, and the ability to handle difficult situations with grace, dignity and effectiveness, and to work as a team with the rest of the church, achieving unity without domination or cult thinking..

tried and tested - to military specs; because in any conflict the margin for error and or failure of men and machine WILL BE FATAL.

the kingdom of god suffers violence, and the strong shall take it by force? christian leadership calls for moral courage and personal intregrity to see us through both good and bad times.

I think the answers here are all good ones. I dont' think I have anything to add, so let me ask a question... how long does a person have to be tested before putting them in a leadership position? I worked with a pastor who decided towards the end of his tenure (after members of his staffs didn't stay longer than abou 4-6 months) that before putting anyone in a leadership position he wanted to have them as a part of the community for 6 months -- a kind of testing period. I would have said this pastor was the problem, people couldn't work with him for more than a few months before he changed direction and therefore the church changed direction. I also sensed some emotional immaturity (it's a draw, he saw the same in me. We were both probably right). He had been working towards ordination for years before coming to start this church.

So for me the question is how long do you test? I don't think there is a hard and fast rule, so I'm looking more for a rule of thumb. In the case of me and my former pastor, I think we both met the criteria. We were both God fearing and trying to do what we thought God was telling us. We were both people who had been Christians for over a decade and we had both gone through training before taking the assignment. However, I think the problems we had with each other and with the church stemmed from our immaturity. How could that have been weeded out better?

There are false teachers who can easily lead people astray

What should you be looking for during this period?

It should be observed as to whether leaders are living by God's Word--not only teaching this but truly living by it. They should be humble and put God first in all they do. They should love all of God's children and follow the teaching of Jesus.

They are not to be a new beleiver (Novice) newly planted, being a new convert could put him in danger of being puffed up with pride. As evaluated, their charcter should be blameless or without accusation.

He must not be a recent convert or he may become arrogant, and also must be tested first and then let them serve as deacons if they are found blameless;

Pax
