Mary C
It is important to look at the way they conduct themselves with their familes, in the business world and every other aspect of their lives. If you look at all of these areas very carefully you can tell what kind of person they are. Everyone is tested to one degress or another. You can see a persons true charcter when they are under pressure or stress.
Marloes
A bad leader can throw the whole group in the (eh, vernieling). They are to be tested on several qualities, like not having mistresses or being drunk most of the time. They have to show they can carry the responsability. Peggy Crans
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? A leadership position is a very serious thing. they should be ovserved carefully to see how they receive different peopoe, how they react in crisis and etc. Time has to be taken to observe their Spiritual maturity Probably many people are picked before anyone truly knows them. You must know the character of the person you are considering. They should be a seasoned christian not a new convert. They must be trustworthy, dependable, faithful, upright not show favoritism. One who loves what is good.
Commissioned
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? Leaders should be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office to witness so that a novice is not put in a position that they are incapable of managing. You're looking for the candidate to be mature in both areas, spiritually and emotionally to judge whether they are capable of handling the position. rambler
You have to be careful that they do not become proud. You also want to give them time to grow in their walk with the Lord and in his wisdom and also to see the level of commitment that they have. lynette66
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? You want true followers of God, not the false teachers that they had in Ephesus. You can learn much about looking at a person's character and the way they live their lives, but people can fool you, too. This is tough; I think I would be easily fooled in trying to find a good leader!
DrD
Because of the importance of the position we need to be sure that that person has been tested and proven to be above reproach - so as not to lean toward the influence of others - to determine that they are righteous and holy - that they are faithful and worthy of trust. All of this is necessary because they are not only leading God's people, but are setting and example that others will follow and develop. . . We should be looking for someone who loves God enough to faithfully and obediently serve God. . .
Barbara A. Lee
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? They need to be observed to check their character. How he acts around certain people. Does he get involved in the comunity. Does he welcome the others into his house for any reason. How responsible is he toward himself? And when I say he I don't just mean the men. The women have just as much to be looked after too. Any peerson in a LEADERSHIP roll should be looked at carefully.
jamjar
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? If they are not spiritually mature they will not be able to make the right decisions because of pride and they will be setting themselves up for a fall from Satan. We should be looking for someone who is spiritually mature, loving, beyond reproach, proven, blameless, trustworthy, holy, devout, someone with the character of Jesus Christ. Kent
Someone who is going to be in a leadership role should first be active in the church for some time, practicing the good attributes of a true Christian leader.
Gerbrand van Schalkwyk
Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? You want to put people devoted to God in place. What should you be looking for during this period? By observing them over time you will know their real character. You must look for a Godly character, whatever shows leadership is important but most important is whether you can see Christ in his life. Craig
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? Prospective leaders should be observed carefully and tested before being placed in office in order to determine that they reality are who they claim to be. In other words a reality check should be conducted to include their personal stability, family life, interests, spiritual maturity, doctrinal views, overall life style, past job performance, commitment to job at hand, and commitment to future calling. The bottom line -- for the prospective future leader's and for everyone's well-being in the church, the prospective leader should be observed to ensure the call and placement into a job or office is a true calling by God and not ego driven for popularity, resume building, job networking, advancement in some secret organization or club, etc. Is the person the real deal is the main concern for the church and whether the prospective leader's life indicates a calling to the job the church is assigning him/her. wifee
2a)Observing how prospective leaders function in church roles e.g.small gp leading, other leadership roles, children’s work etc as away of assessing their character qualities, how they relate/live out faith with different people&respond to challenges, critiscim etc. This is a way of testing their suitability for office.b)We should look that they have a good reputation&character, willingness to be hospitable, heart for poor&lost, that they are faithful, dependable & trustworthy in all that they do,that they are not open to blame, that they love what is good, and seeking to do the right, just, fair thing. They should be serious about their spiritual life, earnestly seeking the Lord daily, how they speak about Jesus in all they do,be mature in their faith, and have had their faith tested so that it is proven to be genuine, and nothing can be held against them in office. Jonathan Edwards
Well sound admonitions! Due to lack of Christain formation, and service; it would be a grave mistake to appoint to such a high office who hasn't not mortified pride...self exaltation. New converts before learning the lessons of humility and being a servant of God is likely to fall the same way Lucifer did. Haughtiness, proud, exalted, and despots are needed in the Church of God, Elect and glorious. The words are teachableness and humility. New converts are diamonds in the rough. New seminarians are not coming from ideal Christain homes, and some are in need of drastic discipleship as they pursue seminary studies. The mortification of pride is something that must be looked for in a Ministerial candidate.  Too many embark on a Ministerial candidate path with thoughts contrary to the basic Christian values of being a Bishop, pastor or Deacon. This emphasis on humility is very important; it is an indication of the fruits of the Holy Spirit are present. The Holy Spirit cannot assist Bishop, pastor nor deacon who is conceited, and doesn't have a teachable spirit.
Krissi
It's just smart to check out a 'purchase' before you invest in it . Sometimes people are damaged or poorly constructed. I've noticed that most of the attention is directed at choosing a pastor. Churches seem to jump through hoops to call a pastor as the positions "below" him seem to be filled on more of an ad hoc basis. Often, elders and deacons are chosen by the recommendation of who they know. Too, the vestry or elder board is particularly vulnerable to being chosen according to the level of their financial contributions, I've noticed. There's a certain kind of person that wants to be at the top and or in the limelight. They do a great job when being watched, but not because they feel a heart-need to humbly serve the congregation. Motive matters. Pastor Ralph gave us a long list of attributes. As I read through the list, I doubted anyone could live up to them. Perhaps the most important thing we can do when selecting church leaders is to select only from those who are "tried and true." Character reveals itself slowly but eventually, character does show itself. It would have to be a long-standing member of the church who has proven himself/herself worthy. To sum, there seems to be two needs to be met when selecting leaders. First, competency -- they need to have the skills and ability to do the job. Second, character -- they need to reflect Jesus.
Brendajoy
Leaders should be established only after a time of testing.   We must see the Spirit at work in their lives.  Fruit should be noticeable.  We should observe them for a bit so that we are able to discern their emotions, are they reactive or responsive, are they thoughtful, compassionate, confidential, humble and teachable.  As we carefully discern, we are able to see if these roles align with their gifting.  It’s best to help them grow in their gifts than put them in a position that could ultimately set them up for difficulty and harm.
Diane D.
Yes. Candidates should be reviewed and "tested" over time. For one reason, you would want to see consistency on both bad and good days.. Also, post conversion or when a person changes from a casual belief in Christ to a more in-depth calling to Him, attitudes and practices may change. If this is the case, then one should watch over time to ensure that eh ffaith and manners are genuine, and reflect those better personality traits we need in a leader. Katy
Q2. Prospective Leaders need to be observed closely to determine their true character. Are they beyond reproach, do they get on with people and welcome strangers? Are they a man of God, praying without ceasing, longing to see others come to Christ. Daily absorbed in the word of God, and willing and able to teach others? How do they treated their families, is there love and respect shown to his wife and children? He must not be a new convert in case he becomes conceited and acts rashly, he must be a man of maturity in the things of God.

crissy464
Leaders should be a level-headed, self controlled person. Should be able to weigh the issues carefully. This person doesn't respond primarily from emotions or prejudice, but is able to weigh issues carefully and fairly. Â Â Â Potential leaders need to be carefully observed and tested so as to be sure they live what they say they believe. It is important that they be a living example of Christ-likeness in all situations. One should be looking for a person who has the quality characteristics mentioned by Paul and Titus. haar
Q2. (1 Timothy 3:6, 10) Why should leaders be observed carefully and tested before placing them in office? What should you be looking for during this period? A2. Would- be leaders need to be observed carefully and tested before being given leadership responsibility. This is to ensure that they would be people who would build and grow the church rather than those who would come in and only to destroy it. Thus, to pick leaders that would be builders of the body of Christ, we should look for those who are godly, trustworthy, above reproach, blameless, not recent convert etc. Â
