Q3. Anger, Gentleness, Pride

Recommended Posts

Q3. (1 Timothy 3; Titus 1:6-9) Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers?

ANSWER: A church is only as healthy as its eldership. The role of an elder can be summed-up in three overlapping functions: Doctrine, Direction (i.e., vision), and Discipline. In addition we will want our elders to have some significant leadership skills.  “Rancher” instead of “Shepherd.”

Church leaders must meet the Biblical qualifications for ultimately the only human protection a church has from straying into aberration, heresy and apostasy is such qualified church leaders. The Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. You simply cannot be an elder, pastor, church leader, or even a ministry leader if you have an anger problem or angry disposition; it is a ministry-disqualified. “No Striker” is where we get our modern day word “pugnacious” which means, “giver of blows.” An overseer/deacon is not quick-tempered and must be able to handle things with a cool mind and a gentle spirit.

What happens when you don’t consider these factors?

ANSWER: To put an angry man or woman in charge of anything inside the church would be disastrous. Argumentative people with angry dispositions are ineligible for ministry because they injure and are harmful to God’s family.

  • Anger stirs up strife and causes one to abound in transgressions according to Proverbs 15:18 and 29:22.
  • Wrath, a form of anger, is contained in the list of “works of the flesh” found in Galatians 5:19-21, and keeps people out of the kingdom of God.
  • God’s servants must not be quarrelsome (2 Timothy 2:24-25).
  • Anger is self-destructive. Job 5:2 says, Resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple (NIV)

It is impossible for an angry leader to continue in ministry. Here's why:

  1. God will remove him/her;
  2. They will be removed by godly overseers in the church;
  3. They will have an unfruitful ministry and will simply quit; OR
  4. They will self-destruct.

One way or another, there is simply no long-term future for such person. Barren branches is what they become. I’ve seen more than one ministry go down in a spectacle of flames because of anger. Let’s consider what Solomon said in Proverbs 22:24-25 (NIV) “24 Do not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, 25 or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared.”

It is important that these tendencies be considered because we do not want a chaotic church where leaders speak anyhow to the people and burst when supposed to address matters amicably. Jesus Christ displayed humility at all times and it is also imperative that leaders should be humble, compassionate, patient because if all thes character traits lack, we will have leaders that snap even if the matter is minute. I want to say leaders must develop a thick skin to be able to take criticism whether it is positive or negative.

The church will not last. What happens when an angry leader prays for the flock and lays his/her hands on them? Would that not be transference of unclean spirits? Therefore, at all times the leader should be sober-minded, principled in addressing matter in a gentle spirit. I do not say that leaders should not confront matters head on but do that with the aim of building and not destroying a person who is out of order.

Tendencies to anger, intimidation, force and pride are of the world and not of God.  To chose men who posses these qualities is just asking for trouble, for those who cannot govern themselves are unfit to govern the church. When we don't consider these factors we bring reproach on the church, religion will suffer, souls will be prejudiced and endangered, more and more false teacher will be produced because the ministry is being managed with worldly views.  How can a man teach others to live godly lives when they are not living godly themselves?

Leaders should bear their office as people setting examples of good conduct, good moral standard as prescribed the Bible. They cannot serve as servants of God if they do not have the qualifications that will bring positive results that will cause growth in the body of Christ.

Q3. (1 Timothy 3) Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers? What happens when you don't consider these factors?

*Tendencies to anger, intimidation,force and pride are very important to consider in selecting church officers because no one in their right minds will want to associate with people with those characteristics.

*When those factors are not considered, spiritual growth will be stunted under such leadership because he himself needs deliverance from the spirits behind such tendencies.

Q3. (1 Timothy 3) Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers? What happens when you don't consider these factors?

A3.

The above human attributes or traits in leaders of the Church could determine the peace and unity of the church. It was thus necessary for Paul to warn Timothy to ensure that those that would be leaders must be those with acceptable conduct.

Q3. When considering someone for Church Leadership, they must be considered holistically. Every aspect of their character must be examined, not just the positive but also the negatives. This is why it is preferable if a candidate for leadership could spend a lot of time at the church getting to know the people and they getting to know him. Anger intimidation, force and pride should not be observed in this person. The fruit of the Spirit should be in evidence. If the church ignores things like anger,  pride and intimidation, they will regret it because it is sowing seeds of resentment and hatred and general unrest within the church and possibly towards this person and it is not honouring to God.

We cannot let our guard down in regards to the Devil.   It is very important to be watchful, careful, sober and alert in the ministry.  By having a malformed character, there will be problems.  Being a leader in the local church requires good character.   The Book of Proverbs underscores the necessity for everyone to be sober and maintaining composure in times of stress.  Timothy and Titus had many challenges; they had to shine forth the presence of Christ.   They needed to be strong; not giving into despair, and not tolerating heterodox agendas to infect their congregants.

Big problems in store for a congregation if the negative traits of a Ministerial candidate are overlooked.    What tragedies have occurred due to ignoring negative signs exhibited in the lives of Ministerial candidates.

If we overlook these ungodly behaviors the church will go downhill. These are the people that any leader would want to avoid. We want to bring people to Christ not lead them astray. Again, if you don't consider these factors the true love of God has gone astray.

In selecting the proper people to serve as elders and deacons, it’s important not to introduce candidates who possess these tendencies into the body of the church as leaders. A little yeast in the batter can destroy the whole batch.
You want your candidates to possess the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

The wrong people in leadership positions in a church can be devastating. They can cause all kinds or divisiveness and division that if it goes unchecked it can tear a church apart. You can see in 1Timothy 1:3-9, where Paul addresses some of the problems of false teaching and doctrine. This also speaks of having the right people in positions of authority and leadership.

We want to be able to talk to our church leaders. If they have a tendency to be get angry easy or intimidate then they won’t be able to teach. When you don’t consider these factors then the people in the church will go where they can learn about God.

Q3. (1 TIMOTHY 3; TITUS 1:6-9)

Why are tendencies to anger, intimidation, force, and pride so important to consider in selecting church officers? What happens when you don't consider these factors?

Self-control is a must for every church officer. Paul mentions this as a necessity for leadership in Titus as well (Titus 1:8). In his, church officers, dealings with others, he must be just; in relation to God, he must be holy; and in respect to himself he must be self-controlled. It means that this person has every passion and appetite under control to obey Christ. And it is possible, with help from the Holy Spirit: “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22, 23). It is vital to select church officers who demonstrate Jesus’ love to all, who are not prone to anger and other forceful or violent behaviours. If this is not done it could be the beginning of the end of the church.
