shema
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives? John's presence at the foot of the cross tells us a lot about him. He was generally always there for Jesus. He must have had traits which endeared him to Jesus and made him the most suitable person to whom Jesus could entrust Mary. Even in the midst of His own suffering, Christ thought of others.Jesus concern for His mother must be an example for the rest of us to treat our mothers with love and concern. How should we apply this in our own lives? Jesus gave John the responsibilty to take care of His mother because He knew he (John) will do it better than any other person perticularly given that she was then a widow. Despite every the rejection He experienced from people and even from His family memebers, He showed love to His family. We should love our parents and care for them. Guitar Jim
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? As Mary's firstborn son Jesus had the responsibility for her welfare. With all that was going on it's likely Jesus didn't get the opportunity to formally appoint His successor to look after His mother. John was there at the cross and His brothers weren't. I'm not saying that His decision was a spur of the moment thing though. John was one of Jesus's most trusted disciples. At that point in time Jesus's brothers and sisters didn't quite believe in Him as the Messiah, although we know that Jesus's brother James eventually became the leader of the Church in Jerusalem. John refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. They were first cousins and close friends. It's likely John reciprocated Jesus's love. We read that John didn't desert Jesus to the extent that the others did. Jesus decided that His mother would be better cared for by John than by his immediate family. Surprisingly we don't know all that much about John, despite his often being mentioned in the Gospels and in Acts. I reckon he was a quiet, unassuming, yet very dependable man. Many authors have written much about Peter, even psychoanalyzing him, and documented his maturity from being a man who acted before he thought to the wise first leader of the newly established Christian Church. John however, apart from accompanying Peter in working miracles early in the Book of Acts, gradually fades into the background. What does this tell us about Jesus? Despite being in total agony from His ordeal, Jesus still had a heart for His family and friends. Even in His hour of dying Jesus was making sure His loved ones were OK. We notice that He saved the thief and made provision for His mother before mentioning His thirst. Always considering others before Himself. How should we apply this in our own lives? Jesus sets an example for us to care for our family, in particular our parents.

Highohfaith
Jesus trusted John and loved John with all his heart . John was faithful, dutiful, and committed to Jesus. He knew John would be the best one to take care of Mary, not only in a physical sense but in spiritual sense. Probably more so in a spiritual sense, because John was a poor man with very little means of financial support, yet his love and devotion for Jesus was supreme. Mary was widowed and in biblical times it was customary for the eldest son to make provisions for the Mother. Since Jesus wouldn't be there, he choose John. John was the only disciple present, consoling the 3 woman at the foot of the cross that day, what does that tell us about John's devotion?. The others had kept their distance for fear of persecution. How can we apply this lesson to our own lives? We must be responsible for loving our family members. Always honor and love our parents, no matter what our differences , LOVE your parents Always. We know that as Christians we must always put Christ first in our life. That does not mean that we forsake family? NO!! Jesus exemplifies love. It means we must have family and the love of Jesus in the proper priority. Jesus must always come first, that does not relive us of family responsibility.. Commissioned
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? As Mary's firstborn, Jesus was legally responsible for her welfare, to ensure that she had a place to live and food to eat during her widowhood he left her in John's charge. What does this tell us about Jesus? It says that He was concern for the welfare of everyone. How should we apply this in our own lives? We should have compassion and love for our family members and be responsible for their obligations.
rosegarden
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives? 3.a. Jesus loved his mother very much and with his leaving he wanted to make sure she was taken care of properly and he appointed John because he knew him and trusted him. John was a believer and the beloved disciple. Apparently, Jesuis knew that John would be more responsible than his own brothers. b. This tells us of Jesus' love and care for his Mother and how responsible he was in making sure she was taken care of properly. c. Jesus set the example of love. We need to love our parents. They spent their whole life caring and loving us. We need especially to care for them when they are no longer able to care for themselves. Guitar Jim
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? Jesus was responsible for His mother's welfare since His earthy father Joseph had obviously been dead for a while by this time. Rather than entrust her care to one of His brothers, Jesus chose his closest earthly friend, John, with the responsibility. John was Jesus' first cousin. Peter was John's cousin and also related to Jesus and he too had a special relationiship with Him. But it was John, the quiet loyal disciple, who had a special place in Jesus' heart. Jesus was uniting His mother with His closest freind. What does this tell us about Jesus? Right to the end of His earthly life Jesus never forgot His responsibilities to family. We have to remember that even in His dying agony Jesus was always acutely aware of the prophecies concerning Him and with their fulfillment. He was also aware of the example He was setting, even to His last breath. How should we apply this in our own lives? We should do everything we can to apply God's love to our family. If we're the only Christian in the family we should not withdraw from them, but rather be witnesses to them and examples to them of what God's presence and love in us means. And we should make sure we continue to look after our parents as they looked after us when we needed them.
Jen
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives? I believe Jesus looked down from the cross and saw His mother grieving and John His disciple grieving and gave them a precious gift. Each other to look after. They were both at the cross, when you read John's gospel it is of the love of Christ, and He redirected their thoughts to have someone to cling to and or care for. John could be depended on to care for Mary in love and kindness. Jesus loved His mother and disciple and even in death took care of them. His disciple was a brother to Him. Mark 3: 33-35. We need to love our families especially when the going gets tough and even when it hurts. We need to take care of them. God Bless! How should we apply this in our own lives? In addition to loving Mary and caring about her future, Jesus, as oldest child, had a legal and moral responsibility for the care of His mother. We should love our family and make it a primary to take care of them spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Our family is our responsibility. tgandy
I feel Jesus made John responsible for his mother because Jesus was one of the 3 disciples who was the closest to him. Jesus loved his mother and took the responsibility of her care seriously. We should honor our Mother and Father and that means love them. In most cases they are doing their best and they love us unconditionally.
Niyonka16
(John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives? St. John, one of three disciples closest to him and he loved him, also he is the only male disciple who is at the foot of the cross as Jesus is dying. The others are were too afraid to be so closely identified with a man condemned by the Romans, as well as by the leaders of their own people (Mark 14:50; Luke 23:49). But St. John is nearby possibly accompanying his own mother (Mary's sister). This shows the compassion and love of Christ for his mother. He now, in his dying moments, commits her to the care of St. John the Apostle, which is an exemplar of his humanity. This in particular, of honoring parents, and providing for them in distress, and old age. We should apply this to our lives by, first, loving our parents no matter what. Jesus, too, had felt the hurt of misunderstanding from his family, even his mother. It's apparent that during part of his ministry, at least, his family didn't understand him. Second, taking responsibility for family obligations. Jesus was clear that his disciples must put commitment to him above family relationships. Here at the end of his life, we see in Jesus the tender love of a son for his mother, a mother who had sometimes misunderstood him. As he dies he settles his earthly obligations as best he can, we hear him say, "Dear woman, here is your son ... Here is your mother" (John 19:26-27). JoanG
Jesus knows that He could trust St John to look after His mother just as if she were his own mother. He knows the love that John is capable of giving and how caring He is. Even as He was dying, Jesus was taking care of those people that He loved thre most. He wanted to make sure that His mother had all that she would need. No matter what, we should take care of our parents in their old age. We should also take care of all of our family. We should extend our love to them even when it is difficult.

lighthouse2014
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives? Jesus makes St. John responsible for his mother, perhaps because he is the only apostle that was at the cross, perhaps he was in a sense a cousin to Jesus or perhaps he knew she would be well cared for by John. Even with all the pain and suffering he was going through, his love as for his mother was great and that as a window she would need care for the rest of her life. As Jesus example, even though he was the Son of God he knew that his mother would need care First he did his Father's will by preaching the good news of the gospel and next he knew he had to care for his earthly family. PathFinder51
(John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? This disciple whom Jesus loved, St. John, one of three disciples closest to him, is the only male disciple who is at the foot of the cross as Jesus is dying. Jesus entrusts his mother to John's care instead and John takes this commission seriously: John 19:27b "From that time on, this disciple took her into his home."23 What does this tell us about Jesus? Jesus demonstrates self-sacrificial love. This is possibly the clearest, most easily understood demonstration of "self" renunciation of genuine "self“ denial, to be found in the New Testament. How should we apply this in our own lives? First, we must love our parents -- no matter what. Second, we are responsible for family obligations. But, above all else, Jesus was clear that his disciples must put commitment to Him above family relationships. Our obedience to Christ must become primary and obedience to parents must become secondary. Our priorities are clear: (1) God himself, (2) our families, (3) our work for God. John6:68-69
This shows Jesus' immense love for others and also obeying the commandments, that even as he was dying on the cross he chose to honor his mother by ensuring that she (a widow) would be taken care of as he would have done (he knew John would do this). Here we see Jesus 1. honor his mother 2. take care of widows. Love, what a lesson to be learned by all. Even when you are personally goes through "tough times" (in Jesus case-dying on the cross) that we must still love & help others, not turn in selfishly & only think of our self "woe is me". van
Jesus makes John responsible for His mother because Jesus is the oldest Child and always took care of His mother. Jesus worried about His mother even from the cross and wanted to make sure she is cared for when He is gone from His earthly body. No matter how much agony Jesus was n at that moment He was more worried about His mother well-being than Himself. I am the oldest out of five siblings, when my mom was alive I was the one who made sure her needs were met on a daily basis. That's the way it has always been with my parents. Santhana David
“Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” (3rd of the last 7 Words of Jesus) Calling one’s mother, “woman” may seem uncongenial, especially for Jesus in His dying moments from the Cross. Though the then Jewish culture probably condoned the term but somehow along the way it suggests a distancing between two persons - in this case mother and son. Here it’s necessary to recapitulate Jesus’ reaction when He is told that His Mother and members of the family were outside asking to speak to Him. “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And pointing towards His disciples He said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.” (Matt 12:48~50). Perhaps Jesus intentionally uttered the word to mean a detachment – an interesting facade as to why this designation was used. It’s not out of disrespect or He was ashamed of her but He probably wanted to spare His mother from the sorrow that her firstborn is being brutally killed. Had He spoke with tenderness and compassion the occasion would have had supplemented the intensity of her passion and sorrow. On the other hand, it would seem that He did not want rude insults directed to her from the mob gathered had they known she is the mother of the crucified King of the Jews. Well the reasons are best known to Him alone. In spite of the agony and the ominous ultimate sacrifice, Jesus was concerned about the care of His widowed mother after He was gone. Therefore, Jesus made an oral statement to make a binding obligation to John. “Woman, here is your son” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother” (John19:26~27). He made provision for His mother by charging John, whom He deeply loved, to take care of her as if she was his mother. But why John, and not others ? Yes it would seem that the responsibility of Jesus’ brothers and sisters to be the caretakers of their mother but first let’s look at the following :- a) He was not about to leave it to others to decide under whose care Mary would be As the firstborn of Mary the care for His remaining parent was Jesus’ responsibility c) It was probable that none of Jesus’ brothers had accepted Him – as the Messiah – so they were not at the foot of the Cross d) John was His brother in the “Kingdom” – the beloved apostle – John was present at the foot of the cross e) John proved his faithfulness at Calvary – he stood by Jesus f) The other brothers in the “Kingdom” had fled for fear of being identified with Jesus g) Jesus wanted to ensure she continued to live in an environment of faith – Mary’s spiritual growth and eternal life were His primary concern. Now what does this tell us. 1) That Jesus is a compassionate “God-Man” whose extensive mercy and care for others lasted right to the very end of his life.” 2) During the time of greatest suffering, Jesus was thinking of others (His mother), not himself. 3) If we really love someone, we should live by the example and put their spiritual welfare ahead of everything else 4) That we must love all – in good times as well bad times. Annelle
Q3. (John 19:26-27) Why does Jesus make St. John responsible for his mother Mary? What does this tell us about Jesus? How should we apply this in our own lives?Jesus knew his disciples and he knew their future. He therefore placed her with the one he knew would look after her the best. We do not know the circumstances of His other disciples and even of His brother. It is easy to judge these people because why did Jesus not put her in their care? He only made an informed decision. This tells us that He loved her like a son would love his mother. We should look after our parents like they looked after us when we were small. We should forgive them for the mistakes they made and allow God to help us in the difficult circumstances that sometimes accompany looking after difficult older people. Konki
In the Middle East and Asian cultures & custom, the eldest son of the family is responsible to take care of the aged parents. Jesus inspite of His suffering on the cross, seeing His widowed mother watching the spectacle of crucifixion and nowhere for her to go after He was gone, entrusts her into the care of His disciple John whom He loved. Jesus knew that John would take care of His mother than any of His brothers or other disciples who were afraid to be identified with Jesus. This tells us that Jesus loved His mother and was concerned for her welfare and well being after He was gone. Jesus is teaching us here that we are to love and take responsibility towards our parents, our immediate family members in need. This is one of God's command to honour our parents and it is moral responsibility.
