tgandy
Running ahead distorts the gospel. You go too far in its original meaning and read into it. Running ahead you miss what is in front of you. To abide or continue in Christ and his teachings means to dwell or rest stand firm in his teachings. Do not be swayed by someone or something stand firm in your faith. This is important because if you are easily swayed you never received his grace or his life giving blood. cezhead
Running ahead of Christ in anything is foolishness. There are no "deeper truths" than those taught by the Creator. If we try to get ahead of Him with our plans or intentions, we will surely fall. Running ahead tells God we are smarter than He is and we don't need Him. To "abide" in His teachings is to live in them, or make them a part of every part of our lives. Just reading them or hearing them preached is a start. Then, we must take these words, plant them in our hearts, and focus on them every waking moment.
JSF
What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and his teachings? Why is this so important? If we are not grounded in the Word and relying on it as our source of truth, then teaching can go absolutely anywhere. The human mind is very creative, and often can be very twisted, as shown by leaders who have deceived people and led them into great falsehood. If we are not getting our teaching purely from the Word, then it is not Christian teaching or guidance. We abide in Christ...being content with what He has chosen to reveal to us through the Word He has given to us.
Uncle Dave
What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and his teachings? Why is this so important? I have decided to give one space to answer all four of the questions in a very short essay form. Looking at the first question, I’m reminded of Daniel 12:4 where he talks about knowledge increasing in the last days. “…Many will go here and there to increase knowledge."(NIV). Running ahead sends one chasing for answers to things we don’t really need to be concerned with. We only need to know what God’s word teaches us for preparation of eternity. If we go jumping ahead of things we quickly begin to forget about God and His teachings. Our focus turns to worldly things instead of living for God. To abide in Christ and His teachings is to be obedient to His commands. The importance of this could be described in two very simple words, eternal life. hanks
Q1. (2 John 9) What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and His teachings? Why is this so important? We have to be careful not to transgress beyond the allowed bounds – to so called ‘deeper truths’. Cults claim they have new light and teach doctrines that God has not revealed in His Word – the so called progressive, advanced thinking. The danger of running ahead, is that we do not stay within the bounds of Christian revelation, or as John put it, continue in the teaching of Christ. To abide or continue in Christ, means to stay with what Jesus Himself taught and what the Bible teaches about Jesus. This is important, for if we claim to know God, we have to believe in the absolute deity and humanity of the Lord Jesus. We are often tempted to ignore God’s commands and hold on to human tradition (Mark 7:8). But our responsibility is to remain loyal to the teaching of Christ, if we don’t, we forfeit God. We must remember God can only be known through His Son (John 14:6). So, the only way to have a personal relationship with God, is through faith in Jesus Christ, the Son. haar
Q1. (2 John 9) Q. What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? A. We are supposed to stay with the truth of the true gospel about the Lord Jesus and His divinity. When people run ahead, the deviate from the truth like the false teachers did and still do. They deceive the vulnerable hearers astray. What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and his teachings? Why is this so important? A. To abide and continue in Christ is to continue to believe in Christ and His teaching and to continue to obey what He says.
Reuben
Q1. (2 John 9) What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and his teachings? Why is this so important? When we " run ahead", we transgress, we go off track, we get lost , and make up our own path and continue hoping we will get to our destination. This will remove us from the narrow path, and we are lost to follow the " road signs" on the correct path, and make up our own to stay ahead, still being lost and not following the correct guidance. To abide is to keep to the truth in the Bible and follow it as it is written. We need to abide as we studied previously, by reading the Bible, praying to God, fellowship, worship, listening to the Holy Spirit . This is the important to not run ahead, but keep on the right track, and it will give us discernment if we face those teachings that just don't sound and feel right. Krissi
What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and his teachings? Why is this so important? I'm a firm believer in colouring between the lines, probably because I do it so poorly and know the consequences, but most theological 'truths' that we depend on involve a bit of 'running ahead.' Take the trinity. You're not going to find it spelled out in scripture, but hinted at. The dual nature of Christ is similar. Over the centuries, scholars and wise people have put together these ideas, painfully and slowly. They had to run ahead of Christ's teachings in order to explicate and understand them. The trinity is a deeper truth, no? Having said that, it does seem that people come to the bible with an agenda and then read into the scripture, or twist and distort it, to fit that agenda. Many of the liberationist theologians distorted the scripture to fit their leftist ideology and desire for revolution. Similarly, gays in the church have distorted scripture to justify their behavioural choice. So it's necessary to colour between the lines, most of the time, and take truths from theologically hammered out doctrine, or you can get confused. People see what they want to see in the Bible unless they're willing to submit and change. Change is painful, so it's easier to try to warp the bible into a shape that is remarkably similar to what is desired. To hone my desires is to submit them. If my desires are not biblical, they have to change. Pronto. But there's that grey area when desires are not contrary to the bible and yet still have to be submitted for God's approval and green-light. This, to me, seems like the most dangerous zone to be in, where running ahead of the limited information in the bible is a real tempataion. Rob Mc.
(2 John 9) What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's teachings to "deeper truths"? What is the danger of "running ahead" of Christ's guidance for our lives? Once we leave the “grounded” state of truth that is God’s Word, we open ourselves up to false ideology that can corrupt what we believe. We start making decisions that go outside of God’s boundaries for our lives (His Commandments). In this state we could easily welcome false idols and begin moving towards sin, instead of remaining steadfast in the truth. What does it mean to "abide" or "continue" in Christ and his teachings? Why is this so important? Abide means to “submit ourselves to” Christ’s teachings as outlined in the gospels. We must remain with the original teachings recorded for us by the Apostles (of the first century church). It is important to abide with Christ so that we don’t lose our core faith of His message. John, himself recorded Jesus saying, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). So we submit ourselves (abide) in His Word and we remain on the correct path, no matter what other view(s) false prophets preach.
