Q1. The Blessing of Abraham

Recommended Posts

Q1. (Genesis 28:3-4) Why does Isaac bless Jacob, especially after Jacob's deception?

Esau's pagan wives were a trial to Jacob and Rebekah, and perhaps were leading Esau further away from the God of promise....and perhaps Isaac came to understand that God would not have given the blessing to one who could resort to murder as with his ancestor Cain which resulted in him being cursed. He must have seen that the blessing really did belong to Jacob, as Rebekah must surely have told him when it was spoken to her, and decided to bless Jacob "legitimately" prior to his journey to Laban's home to seek a wife, and to escape the murderous intentions of Esau.

How does this blessing compare to other blessings of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob?

Isaac gave the blessing given to Abraham, and then to himself, to inherit the land of promise, and for him to multiply until he became a group of peoples.

What are the main elements of Isaac's blessing?

Fruitfulness in multiplying

The land of promise

Nations to be blessed through the chosen lineage...Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.. through whom the Messiah was eventually to come.

It's interesting to me that here is Rebekah again putting a bug in Isaac's ear. She has already discussed with Jacob about leaving and she wants him to be married with descendants, but she also knows he shouldn't marry foreign wives. She already suggested to Jacob himself in 27:43 that he go to her brother Laban and plays on that with Isaac too, saying she'll just die if Jacob marries a foreign girl! Interestingly enough, Isaac then suggests the same plan to Jacob to go to Laban as Rebekah suggested by herself to Jacob also! Isaac then, gives the blessing as he goes out. I think by this time, Isaac knows the true blessing and inheritance is for Jacob, so he gives the "covenant" blessing, the same given to Abraham for many descendants, the promised land and blessings of being the father to many nations.

Q1. (Genesis 28:3-4) Why does Isaac bless Jacob, especially after Jacob's deception? To pass on the blessings that he was blessed with by his own father Abraham. The promise of heirs, the promise of an inheritance for those heirs and the land inheritance for all of them to live on, where ever they sojourned. He may have been waking up to the idea that his son Esau had married outside of the blessing and since his son Jacob had not yet married, maybe he remembered that the blessing would come to this son who had not yet chosen a wife, but would choose one from with in the family clan who were non-idolaters.

How does this blessing compare to other blessings of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? The original blessing that Isaac spoke over Jacob when he was dressed as Esau, sounds to me as if Isaac is speaking and declaring a prophecy over his son rather than praying and asking God to bless Jacob. This one, Gen 28:3-4 is now asking God to intervene in Jacobs life with Yahowah

Despite our bumbling, sinful nature, God continues to bless us in much the same way Isaac continues Jacob's blessing. On the surface, it may not seem "fair" that Jacob got the blessing in the way that he did. And, in my opinion, Jacob and Rebekah need not have helped God bring about His will in an underhand and deceptive way. But Isaac loved him through that, and God loves us through our shortcomings and mistakes.

Issac blessed Jacob after his deception because he still loved him he began to see that Jacob is indeed the son through whom God's promise to Abraham will be fulfilled.

Jacob received the same blessings that Abraham and Issac received:

1. fruitfulness-numerous descendants

2. Land the land of Canaan

3. world-the nations of the world will be blessed

Jacob possessed the birthright. Isaac had forgiven jacob for any deception plus he undoubtedly had heard Esau's grumbling and threats. Isaac was close to God and spent time in prayer. He blessed Jacob because he knew that is what he was to do. Isaac trusted God to work all things for good. He knew to pray in God's Word and so he used God's Word's to bless Jacob asking for land, fruitfulness, and descendants.

In spite of Jacob openly deceiving his father, Isaac still loves him and blesses him generously as he departs. Perhaps Isaac is finally beginning to see that Jacob is indeed the son through whom God's promise to Abraham will be fulfilled. And so he speaks over Jacob the ancient blessing of Abraham: This is the same blessing that God gave Abraham.

  1. Fruitfulness -- numerous descendants,
  2. Land -- the land of Canaan, and
  3. World -- the nations of the world will be blessed.

Issac had already conveyed the blessings that Jacob's birthright inferred. Issac wasn't going to reverse himself. Further he had opportunity to see Esau's heart... through the Hittite wives he had married and his threats to kill Jacob. Clearly it seemed that God had chosen Jacob to bear the blessings promised to Abraham and his descendants.

Jacob was now carrying the blessing of the birthright. Isaac blessed Jacob with the promise given to him by Abraham. He was to continue the inherited promise to this family and build a great nation for God. The main elements are : to be fruitful, the land of Canaan is yours and you will show the world who God is.
