SherryD
Q1. (Colossians 1:5-6) Paul glorifies the gospel, the good news. What words does he use to describe the action of the gospel in verses 5 and 6? Words Paul uses to describe action of the gospel in verses 5 and 6 are faith, love, hope, bearing and growing. Given the temptation the recipients have to adopt another religious philosophy, why do you think he reminds them of the world scope of the gospel's influence? Paul reminds the recipients of the results that have already taken place because of the gospel
linda bass
The words that Paul uses to describe the action of the gospel are "bearing fruit" and "growing." Paul was letting the Colossians know that the Christian movement was growing rapidly all over the known world. When a modern day church becomes embarassed or unimpressed with the gospel message, then it becomes mainly a social club.

A J
Paul describes the gospel of truth as the hope laid up for us in heaven in versus 5/6. What kind of news can keep a body of believers forever excited, forever enthused, always expectant and beyond being bored with its routine? It must be Good News that is energized by the Holy Spirit, fresh manna daily from the Master, and loaded with personal revelation and instruction. Paul reminds us that this lively hope of the Good News Gospel is the same around the world no matter the culture, temptations, tests or trials. We are not alone in our sphere of influence. We are in a Kingdom that is at work even now among every people group on earth.

The gospel brings forth fruit. Given the temptation the recipients have to adopt another religious philosophy, why do you think he reminds them of the gospel's influence? All over the world this gospel is bearing fruit and growing, just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and understood God's grace in all its truth. Q1. (Colossians 1:5-6) Paul glorifies the gospel, the good news. What words does he use to describe the action of the gospel in verses 5 and 6? The actions of the Gospel are faith, love, HOPE, bearing fruit and growing. This shows us that the Gospel is powerful because of these actions, but ultimately because of the One who is the Author of the Gospel, Jesus Christ. poetmom
In reading these responses, I am struck by repeated mentions of things like homosexuality, women in leadership (?!) and even contemporary church services as the results of an irrelevant gospel. I know these issues are "hot buttons" for a lot of people, and I'm not saying they shouldn't be handled, debated, and discussed. But I fear we have forgotten the priority, the high stakes of sharing the love of God through imitating Christ, regardless of these issues. (By the way, I serve on a worship team that is very contemporary--drums and electric guitars!! Yikes! We also "advertised" our church services at a community Memorial Day parade. This is not about watering down the gospel or just making people feel good, as some have accused these contemporary churches of doing. We are an authentic community that is bearing fruit and growing. Is it wrong to let people know of our presence, to draw people into worship with joyful music and, here's a shocker--fun??? Did not David himself advocate pumping up the volume with a multitude of instruments? Does not Paul himself advocate joy, joy, joy? Can we not simultaneously repent of our sins, grow in Christ, but love gathering together making joyful noise? Or do we need to be a bunch of dour-faced believers sitting around lamenting all the gays and lesbians around us?) The church is growing in Africa because of the high stakes of belief. This is a continent (at least sub-Sahara) where the average life span is in the 30s. People are dying of HIV. People don't have water to drink. They have been forgotten by the rest of the world. Jesus is all many of these people have. This is serious business. In China, belief means freedom in Christ, which means risking your life. High stakes. We can't relate to this, so we focus on petty or political issues while people in our communities find solace elsewhere--money, substances, food, what have you. High stakes looks different in the US. Really, we are very comfortable, which I think makes sharing the gospel even harder. So yes, we do need to find new ways to work within our culture, even if that means opening our minds to new strategies and ways of reaching out. Yes, we are competing with the noise out there. So let's make it a joyful noise!

sue57
Words like "spring from" , "bearing fruit and growing" indicate activity, energy and excitement to me. Paul indicates that "all over the world" this is happening. This reflects an active faith of believers, not just sitting back and letting things happen randomly. It requires a focus on the ultimate truth, that is the gospel, without wavering due to common practises or beliefs coming from the world around us. It's very easy to be misled, and often starts with letting very small ideas into our lives that grow and eventually crowd out the gospel. There is no room for anything contradictory to the gospel in our lives or churches. Christs message is one of meeting people where they are and loving them, sharing his truth with them and never giving up or compromising his gospel.
